Hazelwood closure – What does it mean?

The much-publicised announcement confirming the closure of Hazelwood Power Station has fueled extraordinary electricity price rises, particularly in Victoria. Sadly for electricity consumers, further coal-fired plant closures in the Latrobe Valley could be on the horizon as aging power stations become costly to maintain and uncommercial to upgrade. Whilst the closures of Hazelwood and its ilk herald a win for the environment, insufficient policy and planning to soften the landing into this de-carbonised grid will invariably hurt energy consumers with higher prices over the short and medium-term.

The flip-side, of course, is that investing in renewables will look increasingly cheap, but this doesn’t change the fact the real cost of energy has risen substantially and looks like it will continue moving higher.
